The IRS states that it may take up to five days for your financial institution to post your tax refund beyond the “Direct Deposit Sent” date, but it typically will not take more than 2-3 business days.

As you can see, checks are typically mailed out seven days after an electronic deposit would have been sent, so if you want to get your refund soon, you want to efile.
